Although there are government guidelines as to the amount of alcohol men and women should consume, what is also important to know is the huge calorie content of alcohol beverages. Fat contains 9 kilocalories per gram, and both protein and carbohydrates contain 4 kilocalories per gram, but alcohol contains 7 kilocalories per gram. If these calories are not burnt off by the body, they will be stored as fat. Experts also state that not sticking to the alcohol guidelines recommended by the Government can lead to certain cancers and weight gain.
